Inside the $40B+ Sports Tape: NBA Playoffs, World Cup, and the New Real-Money Forecast
By the time the first whistle blows on Game 4 of the Trail Blazers–Spurs series, traders will have moved $27.5 million through a single contract on whether Portland or San Antonio wins. That's before the game starts. Across the next two weeks of NBA playoffs, three first-round games already carry $66+ million in real-money trading on Kalshi alone.
Behind the scenes, the same instruments are running on a much bigger scale than the headlines suggest. Polymarket, Kalshi, and Limitless together have cleared $40B+ in lifetime sports-market volume across 355,917 contracts. Major League Baseball and LaLiga have signed Polymarket as an official partner. Kalshi probability data sits on the data graphics of FOX, CNBC, and CNN. The NBA is in talks with both. We pulled the tape, here's what it actually looks like.
The Three Platforms, At Scale
The "prediction-market" label hides three very different products. Kalshi runs CFTC-regulated event contracts dominated by individual game-level lines — the same tape that shows up on TV graphics. Polymarket runs crypto-settled contracts with the deepest futures and outright markets, drawing global liquidity. Limitless runs zero-fee live in-play markets on the Base network. The volume split tells you what each one is for.

CFTC-regulated, US-domestic users, dense game-level coverage
Crypto-native, global liquidity, deepest futures markets
Base-network, zero-fee, live in-play prop markets
Kalshi's scale is mostly explained by per-event granularity: every NCAA game, every Premier League fixture, every NBA regular-season game gets its own contract. Polymarket's scale is explained by depth: a single 2026 World Cup market for any given country can carry $20M+ in lifetime volume. Limitless is small but built around something neither of the others does — sub-second in-play markets that re-price as a goal is scored.
The NBA Playoffs Are Already a $66M Market This Week
The 2026 NBA first round tipped off in late April. Three games this week already have nine-figure-deep prediction-market volume sitting on the result before the game has been played. Kalshi runs the per-game contracts; lifetime volume is what's already moved through each one. The probability column shows the current implied likelihood that the home team wins.
Three games. $66.2M in real-money traded volume already on the books. Each one re-prices in real time as injury news, lineup changes, and pregame reports come in — the same way an options chain re-prices around an earnings call. The contracts settle in cash within minutes of the final buzzer.
The Futures Market: Who Wins It All
Polymarket is where the long-dated bets live. Each team has its own contract on the 2026 NBA Finals — “Will [team] win the Championship?” — and the implied probabilities sum to 100% across the field. The four below are the most-traded individual team contracts.
The numbers say the smart-money distribution is wide and contested. The Spurs at 17% and the Lakers at 3% are not the same story; the field is open. Across all 30 NBA team Finals contracts on Polymarket, lifetime volume is in the low nine figures — that's an order of magnitude more than the equivalent prop on most US sportsbooks.
The Quiet Giant: 2026 World Cup Futures
The single largest sports prediction-market category right now isn't even live yet. The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in June, and Polymarket runs an outright contract for every nation. Most have $17M–$36M in lifetime volume — even nations the model doesn't list as serious favorites.
France at 16% and Spain at 15% are inside the cluster of credible favorites; the volume on Uzbekistan and Curaçao — both near 0% — is hedge-trading and contrarian-position activity, not sincere prediction. The fact that hedging exists at this scale on a contract for a national side that won't qualify for the round of 16 is itself a sign of how deep the liquidity has become.
The European Tape: Premier League + LaLiga
Polymarket signed LaLiga as an official partner earlier this cycle — the first major European football league to ink a prediction-market deal. The Premier League, traded mostly on Limitless and Polymarket, is in the closing weeks of the 2025/26 season. The biggest single soccer market right now is a Limitless contract on Chelsea's Top-3 finish.

Who's Actually Trading: The April Whales
Wallet-level data on Polymarket is on-chain and public. The biggest single sports trades from the past 30 days range from $336K to $1.05M per fill, concentrated across a handful of named accounts. Most are sell-the-resolved-side trades — cashing out the winning leg at $1.00 in the minutes after the result locks — but the buy-side trades reveal sharp positioning.
One account — Dhdhsjsj — cashed out four positions over $700K each in 72 hours, all sells at $1.00, across tennis, Counter-Strike, and Dota 2 markets. Two other accounts (JPMorgan101 and Latina) are running consistent NBA and MLB sell-side flow at six-figure size. The buy-side $510K trade on Mets vs. Dodgers at 89% and the $496K buy on Trail Blazers vs. Spurs at 84% are real conviction bets — positions sized like an asset-management book, not a casual sportsbook ticket.
Why the Leagues Are Signing
The volume is the answer, but the more interesting question is the shape of it. Real-money probability data has three properties that broadcasters and leagues are starting to value over traditional polling and sportsbook lines:
- It updates continuously. A Kalshi NBA game contract re-prices every few seconds. A traditional poll takes a week to field; a sportsbook line moves but doesn't expose the full distribution. Prediction markets give a live probability stream — the same data shape that powers a stock chart.
- It aggregates across audiences. Polymarket draws crypto-native global liquidity; Kalshi draws US domestic users; Limitless draws on-chain in-play traders. The cross-platform spread is itself a signal — when Polymarket and Kalshi disagree on the same NBA Finals contract by 4 points, that's actionable information about audience asymmetry.
- It has skin in the game. Every quote on the screen is backed by a real position. That's a different epistemic standard than “58% of fans surveyed” — it's closer to a CME futures quote on a commodity than an opinion poll. Broadcasters and leagues understand that distinction better than the headlines suggest.
The MLB and LaLiga partnerships, the NBA discussions, and the broadcaster integrations all point at the same conclusion: real-money probability data is becoming a sports-information layer leagues want to participate in — not a fringe category they tolerate.
What's Next
The 2026 NBA Playoffs run through mid-June. Each round adds new markets, deeper contracts, and another wave of in-game pricing. The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins June 11; the outright market alone is on track to be the most-traded sports prediction-market event in history. The MLB regular season runs to October, with a partnership-amplified World Series futures arc coming with it.
The signal we're watching most closely is the NBA partnership. The league is in active discussions with both Polymarket and Kalshi. If either one closes, the next NBA season opens with the deepest probability data layer any sports league has ever shipped — an order of magnitude more granular than the win-probability widgets ESPN runs today, with real-money prices behind every line.
The numbers on this page are a snapshot of one Wednesday in late April. By the time you read this, the playoffs have moved on, the World Cup brackets have tightened, and the Chelsea Top-3 contract has resolved. The infrastructure underneath is what matters. $40B+ says it's here.
Methodology & Data
All volume figures are sourced from the PredictMarketCap database, which ingests every market's public metadata directly from each platform's API. Lifetime volume is each platform's reported cumulative dollar volume per market, normalized to USD. Whale trades are individual on-chain Polymarket fills $25K and above from the trailing 30 days, ranked by trade size. The $40B+ headline is a rounded-down floor on the actual sum of volume_total across all markets categorized as sports on each platform as of April 29, 2026; the per-platform totals shown in the chart above are the exact figures.
Trader names shown are the displayed pseudonyms on Polymarket; truncated 0x addresses are wallets without a set display name. Kalshi trades are anonymous and do not appear in the wallet leaderboard.
